South St. Paul Riverfront

South St. Paul is situated along the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River rises and recedes regularly based on rain fall, snow fall, and how quickly the snow melts in the spring. Due to the potential for flooding of properties adjacent to the river, a permanent levee or flood wall was built:

Property Protection Flood Walls

• Properties near the river from approximately I-494 to just north of Wentworth Avenue are protected by a permanent levee or flood wall with an average elevation of 710.0.  See Map of Levee Protected Area.
• Properties near the river and north of Wentworth Avenue are not protected by the permanent levee. The contours vary in height.  See Map of Area North of Levee.
• Properties near the river and south of I-494 are not protected by the permanent levee. The contours vary in height.  See Map of Area South of Levee.

Protective Measures

If the city anticipates flooding, properties east of Concord Street should be prepared for possible flooding. Protective measures include:

• Move valued items to a higher elevation or alternate location.
• Move hazardous items to a higher elevation or alternate location.
• Prepare for evacuation
• Secure or disconnect your electrical service (Xcel Energy is your best source of information on this issue)
• Emergency notifications through Everbridge System.

Sandbagging for Flood Protection

• A sandbag dike must be built properly to prevent or reduce flood damage.  The NDSU website has excellent information for constructing a sandbag dike.
