City Code Enforcement

The City of South St. Paul is committed to maintaining property values. Code enforcement benefits our community by helping to maintain quality residential and business properties. The Code Enforcement Department enforces compliance with certain zoning ordinances. The city receives many calls from citizens with property maintenance concerns. Code enforcement is utilized in response to those concerns.

Re-Inspection Fees

On December 1, 2008, the South St. Paul City Council approved a re-inspection fee ordinance (City Code Section 26) authorizing re-inspection fees for non-compliant properties. There will be no fee charged for an initial inspection to determine the existence of a city code violation or for finding compliance with an initial notice to correct a violation.

If, upon re-inspection, violation(s) are still noted, a compliance notice will be issued to the property owner outlining issues that still require attention and a new compliance date along with a re-inspection fee will be charged.  Further failure to correct a violation will result in fees of $100 for the next inspection and $100 for each re-inspection thereafter.

Failure to Pay

Re-inspection fees will be due within 30 days after initial billing. Failure to pay these fees in a timely manner may result in the denial, revocation, suspension, or non-renewal on any city license or permit. For housing maintenance re-inspections, these fees may also be charged against the property as a special assessment.
